Getting over a burglary: dealing with the aftermath |
Having your house broken into can be a traumatic experience. The feeling that you're not safe in your own home can be something that doesn't automatically go away, and can often make people scared to be alone in their house. A lot of people have trouble sleeping, or get nervous at even the slightest noise. For some people, it's too much and they will even consider moving somewhere else. You should know that these feelings are completely normal, and that they should start to fade in time. However, for the time being, there are certain things you can do to make you feel more secure and to start moving on. We have put together a guide to some of the steps you can take to regain some peace of mind. |

Know that it's okay to be upset |
It's okay to acknowledge the fact that you are upset. Your house has been broken into and someone has violated your privacy, therefore it's okay to admit that you feel like you have been victimised. A lot of people are embarrassed to admit that they feel scared or upset, even though they are normal things to be feeling. Don't let anyone minimise your feelings by making comments such as "it's lucky you weren't home" – they might mean well but you have every right to still feel upset. |

Secure your home |
The burglary might have already happened but that doesn't mean that it's too late to secure your home. Whilst you may have been extremely unlucky, it's possible that the thief targeted your home for a reason. Is your security up to date? Do you even have security measures in place?
If the answer is no, then now is the best time to take steps to protect your home from any further incidents. Get a home security system installed as soon as possible, as well as triple checking that all your locks are secure and in working order. Here at BWS Security, we specialise in fitting intruder alarms in Bath. They are an excellent way to secure your home, and alert you to any unwanted presence. |

Talk to people how you are feeling |
Just like its okay to admit that you are upset, it's also okay to talk about it with someone else. You're going to be feeling distressed and unsettled, but you don't have to suffer alone. If you live by yourself, or your partner just doesn't understand, make sure that you speak to friends or family about how you're coping. If you do live alone, ask someone to stay with you for a few days. Your loved ones will be happy to know that they are helping. |
